The Preston Bus depot is expected to see major renovation works take place for at least the next year.
Dating back to the late 1800s in Deepdale Road the depot will be able to house up to 130 vehicles once work is finished.
A large hard-standing area is being created after an old building was demolished and the current bus repair shed is seeing major work to its roof and inside.
Commercial director Thomas Calderbank told Blog Preston: “We’re changing the repair area considerably so we can service more buses and it also needs upgrading now we have more hybrid vehicles in our fleet.
“At the moment there is some disruption as we don’t have as large an area to keep the buses overnight – but once finished we’ll have a lot more space here.”
The frontage on Deepdale Road is not due to see any changes but the repair shed’s roof is due for major work as it currently has many leaking parts.
The depot also services Preston City Council vehicles as well as lots of other large vehicles, in a separate repair shed behind the bus repair shed.
Mr Calderbank said: “This whole site dates back to when trams used to run in the city and is a part of the city’s transport heritage.
“We’re going to be doing works on the site over the next year, bit by bit.”
Approval for the renovation works was given in June this year by the city council.
