The M6 was held both directions for around an hour between junction 27 and 26 while investigation work takes place.
Police were called to junction 27 on the M6 at 1.30am this morning (16 August) to reports of a concern for welfare. They attended the scene and discovered the body of a women.
Update: All closures now lifted between J27-J26 of M6
The M6 has been closed southbound from junction 27 to 26 since that time with extensive investigation work taking place. Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Service and other emergency services have all been in attendance.

National Highways North West reported at around 12.05pm that the carriageway would need to be closed in both directions while investigations continue to take place. The northbound closure is described as temporary. By 1pm, they had confirmed the northbound carriageway had opened but the southbound remained closed.
It’s not yet clear how long closures will be in place.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said earlier: “At around 1.25am this morning (Friday 16 August 2024), we were called to the junction 27 of the M6 for a concern for welfare of a female. We attended the scene and sadly discovered the body of the female.
“The M6 southbound between junction 27 and 26 is closed while officers continue with their investigations. Significant delays are to be expected in the area for the immediate future.
“Thank you for your patience at this time. If anyone has any information about this incident or any footage, including dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage is asked to call 101 quoting log number 171 of 16/08/2024.”
A diversion route is in place via a ‘solid square diversion symbol’. Different routes are in place for HGVs and non-HGVs.
