The M6 is closed southbound due to an ongoing police incident relating to a person falling from a bridge.

The motorway was closed at around 2am between junction 27 for Standish and 26 for Skelmersdale while a multi-agency response to the incident took place.

Update: All closures now lifted on M6 between J27-J26

A person has fallen from a bridge in the early hours of the morning, Greater Manchester Police confirmed. Both police and North West Ambulance Service are in attendance.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “We’re responding to reports of a person falling from a bridge on the M6 between J27 & J26 southbound.

“The road is closed while emergency services attend and significant delays are expected in the area for the immediate future. Thank you for your patience at this time.”

A spokesperson for National Highways: North West said: “Due to the nature of the incident police collision investigations are required, the carriageway will not be able to re-open until these have taken place.

“There is currently no estimate available for the M6 southbound between J27 and J26 can open.”

A further update from Highways Agency North West suggests the stretch of motorway will be closed for most of Friday morning due to the complex investigation work needed.

Delays of around 30 minutes are being experienced as of 7.30am on Friday.

A diversion route is in place via a ‘solid square diversion symbol’. Different routes are in place for HGVs and non-HGVs.
