Two taxi drivers had their licences suspended after Preston City Council and Wolverhampton Council teamed up for compliance checks.
Wolverhampton Council is known for issuing a high-volume of taxi driver licences out of area – with many falling in the North West.
Between April 2023 and March 2024, Wolverhampton Council issued 813 licences for drivers in its area – and 20,375 for drivers based elsewhere.

The existing regulations mean that local authorities cannot withhold licences based on area of residence but concerns have been voiced that the practice makes it challenging to monitor standards.
Checks outside Preston Railway Station on Friday (26 July) night resulted in two drivers having their private hire vehicle licences suspended due to the level of wear on their tyres reaching ‘illegal’ levels.
