Preston’s Harris Museum has launched a new initiative which aims to shape exhibitions and events across the city.

Since 2023, a group of Programme Advisors have been meeting to ‘revolutionise’ the museum’s approach to programming.

The group, which represents the people of Preston, will soon begin to shape new exhibitions and events to resonate with The Harris’ diverse audiences.

The Programme Advisors, formed of diverse, passionate individuals with local knowledge, will select new exhibitions, activities and events for The Harris’ new Gallery Two.

Councillor Anna Hindle, Cabinet Member for Culture and Arts at Preston City Council, said: “I’m delighted that we are giving the people of Preston the opportunity to select the exhibition and activities that will bring to life The Harris’Gallery Two. We firmly believe that the community’s active participation and diverse viewpoints are instrumental in shaping Harris’s identity.

“By facilitating important conversations and openly listening to the community’s wants and needs, The Harris aims to create a positive experience and foster a stronger connection with its visitors.”

The community-empowered approach aims to help embed new ways of working that reflect community voice in The Harris, drive engagement and foster a sense of ownership and pride amongst visitors.

The Harris will reopen in 2025 and is currently operating from other local spaces around Preston, with plans for pop-up exhibitions and events.
