Part of Lancaster Canal near Preston shut as embankment collapses

A section of the Lancaster Canal near Preston has been closed.

Part of the embankment and towpath has collapsed to the north of the Moons Bridge Marina near Woodplumpton.

A ‘large volume of water’ has been reported as flowing into a nearby brook and the towpath is not passable.

Signs are up near the swing bridge at bridge 37 by Moons Bridge warning of the canal being closed. The canal is closed up to bridge 38 on the stretch up towards Garstang.

Temporary dams have now been put in place to drain part of the canal and work on a repair.
