Organisers of Longridge Show are aiming to highlight the very best of the area’s farming heritage to visitors this weekend.

Taking place on Saturday (6 July) at the showground on Lower Lane, Longridge, the event is the first in a series of agricultural shows taking place around the Preston area over the next two months.

For Claire Eccles, who chairs Goosnargh and Longridge Agricultural Society, which runs Longridge Show, it is a great opportunity to showcase the very best of local farming and food production.

She said: “We have a major focus on educating the public about farming.

“Longridge is changing in terms of the size and scale of the town, so for us it is about bringing farming and food production to that audience and promoting everything that is great about agriculture.”

Longridge Show will host a series of livestock competitions and visitors will be able to see some of the area’s best beef and dairy cattle, as well as learning more about a range of different sheep breeds.

Alongside the livestock there will be food and craft tents, vintage tractors and Longridge Young Farmers’ Club will have a marquee. They will also be hosting tug of war competitions against other Young Farmers’ clubs throughout the day.

And while the likes of Jeremy Clarkson and Kaleb Cooper have helped raise the profile of agriculture with the wildly successful Amazon Prime show Clarkson’s Farm, Ms Eccles said Saturday offered the chance for visitors to make real world connections with local farming.

She added: “A lot of people have only seen farming on TV, but this weekend’s show offers them the chance to see it for real and learn more about where their food comes from and the importance of buying locally.

“We really want families to attend and that is why we have made it £5 for children to enter the show, and that also allows them to go on the inflatables during the day as well.”

Longridge Show is the first in a series of local agricultural shows taking place this summer.

Next up after this weekend will be Great Eccleston Show on 13-14 July; the Royal Lancashire Show at Ribchester on 19-21 July; Garstang Show on 3 August; and Chipping Show on 26 August.
