A team of regulars from a South Ribble pub will undertake a gruelling challenge to raise money for a cancer charity.

On Saturday, June 15th, a group of Lostock Ale House regulars will carry a barrel of beer up to the summit of Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.

The team will carry the 60kg, nine-gallon barrel up the 3,209-foot climb. At the top, they will tap (open) the barrel to offer other climbers the novelty of enjoying a beer at the highest bar in the land, in return for a donation to Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Ray opened Lostock Alehouse four years ago, his son Ben will be one of the team carriers. He said: “We have researched this and as far as we are aware, no one has ever climbed Scafell Pike with a barrel of beer before. It’s a first.”

The team was inspired to fundraise for Rosemere Cancer Foundation after Ray lost his father Tom, best friend John Shingleston and his brother Dean to cancer. Ben’s nanny Sandra also underwent successful treatment for breast cancer.

Ben added: “It’s a very personal connection for us.”

Ben and the team have built a special Roman litter type frame to carry the barrel. Following the trek, the team will return to Lostock Alehouse for a special party that will continue the fundraising. There will be food, a guest vocalist and raffles.

Lostock Alehouse hosts regular events to support both local and national charities. Staff and customers have fundraised for St Catherine’s Hospice, Derian House Children’s Hospice, the Deaf Society, Blood Bikes UK and men’s mental health charity the Movember Foundation.

Rosemere Cancer Foundation brings world class cancer treatments and services to patients being treated at Rosemere Cancer Centre, the region’s specialist cancer treatment and radiotherapy centre. Based at at the Royal Preston Hospital, and at eight other local hospital cancer units across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The charity funds cutting-edge equipment, clinical research, staff training and innovative services that the NHS cannot afford. Making patients’ care more effective, comfortable and stress-free. For more information on its work, or to make a donation, visit
