A pub in Leyland will close at the start of June to undergo an extensive renovation that will see it miss the opportunity to screen two key England fixtures in Euro 2024.
The Wheatsheaf, on Leyland Lane, will close on 2 June and reopen on 24 June after a spend of £100,000 to bring the pub up to date.
The pub will be back open in time for England’s final group fixture against Slovenia on 25 June and will be serving real ale for the first time in a decade.

John Lloyd, a local pub operator who also has the Black Bull in Penwortham and the Plough in Euxton, said: “The Wheatsheaf is a good local community pub with great customers. The sympathetic refurbishment is designed to give regulars a better, more comfortable environment in which to socialise.
“As well as offering real ale, we’re upgrading the juke box and pool, introducing Karaoke and are looking to recruit a darts team. I’m looking forward to giving back the community a much-improved pub, just in time to watch the Euros.
“The Wheatsheaf is just 10 minutes from one of my other pubs, The Plough at Euxton, so all Wheatsheaf customers will receive a 15% discount when visiting The Plough with kids able to use the crazy golf for free.”
The pub will be showing both live Sky and TNT sports, with plans for dominoes, karaoke, quizzes and regular entertainment.
The plans for the renovation, in addition to a wider renovation, will see different ‘zones’, including a lounge, bar area, a new pool room and new toilet facilities.
Investment has also been made by Star Pubs – a subsidiary of Heineken.
Richie Roberts, business development manager for Star Pubs, said: “The much-needed refurbishment will completely transform The Wheatsheaf taking it to the next level. It brings the surroundings in line with the good service that John introduced when he took the pub on last year.
“John has a reputation for great cask ale at his other pub The Black Bull in Penwortham, so locals and fans of real ale will be well looked after at The Wheatsheaf. I wish John, his team and The Wheatsheaf customers a great summer ahead.”
