An afternoon of period themed celebrations will be held on Saturday (22 June) outside Ye Olde Hob Inn to honour the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Bamber Bridge.

South Ribble Borough Council has worked with Preston Black History Group to put on an afternoon of themed entertainment and a history walk following the route soldiers would have taken back in 1943.

There will be music and dance, military vehicles, food, drink and children’s activities between 1pm – 8pm. The schedule will be released in due course.

On Friday 21 June at 7:30pm, there will also be a free film screening of the Battle of Bamber Bridge documentary in Ye Olde Hob Inn.

The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with Clinton Smith, chair of Preston Black History Group and film director, Ceri Dingle.

The battle of Bamber Bridge began when white American military police (MPs) tried to arrest African American soldiers at the Ye Olde Hob Inn for being out of uniform.

A confrontation broke out on the street and a white MP shot and killed Private William Crossland. Both sides fired throughout the night. 32 African American soldiers were convicted of mutiny and related crimes, poor leadership, the racist attitudes of the MPs were acknowledged as a cause.
