Galloways Society for the Blind is hosting their first-ever Fire Walk.

Members of the community, including 89-year-old volunteer Ann Hyde, will walk over hot coals to raise money for local people with sight loss.

Ann Hyde shared her excitement, she said: “I’ve been volunteering with Galloways for many years, and it’s been a rewarding experience. The Fire Walk Challenge is a great way to show our commitment and raise awareness for a cause that’s close to my heart. I’m looking forward to taking on this challenge and hope it inspires others to get involved.”

The event is set to take place on Wednesday (12 June) at Galloways’ head office in Howick House, Penwortham. Registration begins at 6:30 PM, with the Fire Walk beginning at 7:15 PM. Participants will receive a safety briefing and safety gear, first aid will also be available on-site. After completing the Fire Walk, participants will be awarded their certificate of completion.

Sharon Plunkett, Income Generation Manager, said: “Our Fire Walk is not just a challenge; it’s a chance for the community to support local people with sight loss. We are especially proud of Ann Hyde, who at 89 years old, demonstrates the spirit of commitment and courage that defines our volunteers. Join us in this daring event to raise awareness and essential funds.”

This week marks Volunteer Awareness Week, making it the perfect time to honour the dedication of Galloways’ volunteers. Being one of the oldest charities in Lancashire (established in 1867), the event will showcase the community’s ongoing commitment supporting local people with visual impairments. Funds raised will support the charity’s services, providing opportunities to enrich the lives of people with sight loss across the Preston community.
