A storm formed over Preston as forecast to interrupt a weekend of warm, sunny weather.

The Met Office had issued a weather warning for the vast majority of the UK which indicated that Preston could expect downpours, flash-flooding, and thunder and lightning.

It was evening before the storm arrived but it was fierce when it did – and the clouds over Preston appeared to form what is known as a ‘supercell’ formation during that time.

According to the Met Office: “Thunderstorms that exhibit persistent and deep rotation are called ‘supercells’.”

The weather on Monday morning (13 May) may have you hoping that we were in for another extended period of sun, but this is likely to change by the evening.

The Met Office reports that rain will be persistent and heavy overnight and continuing into Tuesday, although the afternoon will be more pleasant.

From Wednesday to Friday, we can expect unsettled weather with a mixture of sunny spells and showers – with potentially more thunder.
