A family from Preston have set up a football fundraiser for two charities close to their hearts.

Sophie Burns, 28, and her family are aiming to raise ‘as much as they can’ for the Alzheimer’s Society and Freddie’s Sunshine during a family-fun day in Fulwood.

After their ‘Grannie Annie’ as known by all who know her, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s earlier this year at the age of 87, they wanted to do something for her.

Sophie said: “Grannie Annie’s unwavering support and love have always been the bedrock of our family, but now, as Alzheimer’s slowly brings about changes, it’s our turn to be there for her.

“We have been really lucky, both my mum (Susan Burns, 55) and uncle (Jan DeJong, 51) have done everything in their power to get all the information and medical support we could possibly need for Grannie Annie, however not everyone in our position is that lucky.”

Described as a ‘laugh and a half’ and an ‘independent, strong woman’ the family wanted to show their support to their grandma and raise money for those who may go through the disease alone.

As well as supporting their grandma, the family also wanted to fundraise for a charity set up by their family friends, after the loss of their baby boy.

Freddie’s Sunshine was set up by Mark and Aimee Beaumont in memory of Freddie George Beaumont, a ‘sunshine of a human who was taken too soon’.

In 2022, just three weeks after his first birthday Freddie passed away suddenly due to Strep A and an empyema on his lung.

Sophie said: “They didn’t know what to do. Aimee and Mark felt completely lost having to leave the hospital without their precious little boy, and have to accept a new life without him living.”

Although supported by the NHS bereavement team in Salford, they still struggled, making it clear to the couple that there needed to be somewhere for families in a similar position to go when grieving the loss of a child.

They set up Freddie’s Sunshine with the aim to provide a sanctuary for families to go to experience their grief with other people who understand.

Aimee and Mark have also played a huge part in organising the football fundraiser, alongside Sophie’s family and friends.

The football fundraiser, on 6 July, will be at Fulwood Amateurs FC, who have let the family use their venue for free. It will cost £3 to get in, with the money raised being split equally between the two charities.

The charities will play against each other, kicking off at 2pm, with teams of family, friends and supporters of all abilities.

There will also be a DJ, food, drink and a raffle with prizes such as a Dyson hair straightener worth over £300.
