A father from Preston has shared his battle with mental health to inspire other men to break the silence and seek support.
Dimal Patel, 46, from Fulwood and a father to a 15-year-old daughter has faced the challenges of mental health head-on, after being diagnosed with depression in 2020, and aims to shed a light on the importance of mental well-being by sharing his journey.
After his âlife-alteringâ diagnosis, Dimal said: âThis news not only shook my world but also had a profound impact on my family, especially my daughter.
âWitnessing her father struggle with mental health issues was undoubtedly challenging for her, and I knew I had to be strong not only for myself but for her as well.â

However, after struggling with the illness, Dimalâs journey took a darker turn when he attempted to take his own life.
He said: âIt was a moment of profound pain and desperation, one that I will never forget.
âHowever, it was also the turning point that pushed me to seek help and embark on a path to healing.â

With the support of a therapist, Dimal began his recovery, treating his depression and also post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He was able to share his âdeepest fears and emotionsâ.
Although recovery was not easy, with the support of his therapist and loved ones he began to regain control of his life.
During this period, Dimal decided to âchallenge societal normsâ and âembrace a new adventureâ signing up to two modelling agencies.
âBeing on the books of these agencies not only boosted my self-confidence but also provided a platform for me to express myself creatively.
âIt became a means to challenge the stereotypes associated with masculinity and redefine beauty standards. The modelling industry, known for its focus on youth and perfection, allowed me to break free from societal expectations and embrace my own unique beauty.
“The support and encouragement I received from the modelling agencies further fuelled my journey of self-discovery and resilience. They helped me rebuild my confidence and reminded me that age is just a number.
âThrough this experience, I learned that it is never too late to pursue your passions and embrace your true self.â

During Mental Health Awareness Week (13-19 May) Dimal felt a âdeep sense of gratitudeâ for his progress and decided to share his story with the hope of inspiring others, particularly men, to open up.
âIt is crucial for society to understand that mental health does not discriminate based on gender, age, or any other factor. We must create a culture of empathy, understanding, and acceptance.â
