Edinburgh-fringe style theatre is returning to The Ferret with one-woman show Canine Teeth by Ayse Balkos.
Confronting themes of family, freedom, and faith, Canine Teeth is a gripping journey into the depths of Turkish cultural norms, as experienced through the eyes of writer and performer Balkos.
Part stand-up, part spoken word and part musical performance, the show is set against the backdrop of a society fixated on marriage and women’s roles.
Balkos gives an insightful exploration of her own lived experiences as a young Turkish woman, using honesty, wit and vulnerability.

Audience members at the first few performances of the show described it as ‘moving, poetic, emotional’, and ‘a story that resonated thoroughly with being a woman’.
Balkos is a Turkish-born writer and performer who is now based in Sheffield. Her work focuses on strikingly original and fearless stories.
Canien Teeth merges elements of her music and spoken word practice with live-art, projection and stand-up comedy for a unique multi-media performance.
Show promoter Garry Cook from Enjoy the Show, which has put on almost 200 events in Preston, said: “I am thrilled to bring Ayse’s show to The Ferret.
“A massive part of the work I do is support new theatre and emerging artists and Ayse fits exactly into this category. So prepare to be swept away by an unforgettable theatrical experience.
“Just like when you go to Edinburgh Fringe, there are the big successful shows – many of which I have brought to Preston – and there’s the exciting new stuff.
“It is these unknown performers, the ones we have not heard of, the ones at Edinburgh for the first time or the ones at the early stages of their career, where the rich rewards are.
“That’s why I’m excited that Ayse’s show is coming to Preston, so that we as the audience get the opportunity to see something totally unique.”

Garry added: “I’ve been bringing shows to the city since 2017. Most of them have been the brilliant shows I’ve seen in Edinburgh and have wanted to bring to a Preston audience.
“But these shows don’t get devised, created and born in Edinburgh. It’s crucial that these shows get development support, and this is why Canine Teeth is coming to Preston. This show is new – it could go on to amazing things. This show could be the best thing you’ve ever seen.”
Canine Teeth is on at The Ferret on Wednesday 8 May. You can get tickets from Skiddle.
