A woman who moved to Preston to launch a Bollywood academy has spoken about the transformative effect dance has had on her life.

Jenny Patel relocated from Wolverhampton with her boyfriend Ronnie in September 2022, despite not knowing anybody here in Preston.

21-year-old Jenny, who has been dancing since the age of seven, said: “Bollywood dance became my solace during the toughest years of my life.

“During my gap year, I decided to test the waters by conducting trial classes, which solidified my decision to pursue this passion instead of heading to university.

“Moving to Preston to fulfil my dream of opening Jenny’s Bollywood Academy was a monumental step for me.

“The vibrant cultural scene in Preston – with events like the Mela and the Encounter Festival – excited me, and I eagerly anticipated participating in them.”

Jenny launched classes in January 2023 at Sparkle Dance Studios in Calder Street, Ashton-on-Ribble, catering to various demographics.

“Drawing from my personal experience, I understand how dance can be transformative, aiding in building confidence and providing comfort during challenging times,” said Jenny.

“I have gradually fostered a community of students who share my passion for Bollywood dance.

“We offer mother and daughter sessions, adult beginner classes, children’s classes, and soon, adult advanced sessions. Additionally, we provide services for hen dos and private events.”

Since launching, Jenny’s Bollywood Academy has completed its first public performance, been featured on BBC Radio Lancashire, and even filmed for Britain’s Got Talent, which is set to air this year.

Jenny said: “These achievements validate our commitment to providing fun, friendly classes that promote physical and mental health while building confidence in our students.

“Hearing stories of how our classes have become the highlight of someone’s week or how they’ve helped a child gain confidence to try new things warms my heart. It’s moments like these that fuel my passion and drive to reach as many people as possible with the joy of Bollywood dance.

“Embarking on this journey has brought me immeasurable happiness, and I have no regrets about following my heart. I am eagerly anticipating even bigger and better things in the future.”
