A recent volunteer event at Winckley Square was so oversubscribed that a planned three-hour job took just a fraction of the time to complete.
Friends of Winckley Square (FoWS) had put a shout out for helpers after Conlon Construction, working with the Woodland Trust, had offered hedge plants for the Gardens.
Patricia Harrison, chair of FoWS, said of the event on Friday 15 March: “We were inundated with offers of help. What was most pleasing is that those who came to join in the planting spanned locals, workers from nearby businesses, and the Preston City Gardens Team.
“The FoWS team was slightly embarrassed that far more volunteers came than were needed. So, what we thought was a three-hour job was finished in next to no time. However, without exception, even those who ended up without planting anything said that they were pleased to be asked and keen to be part of any future initiatives that contribute to the appeal of the Gardens.”

Pat added: “Sometimes people assume that FoWS is only concerned with Heritage. In fact, we are committed not only to keeping alive the history of the Winckley Quarter but also its present usage and its future as a place where the community can come together in a beautiful setting, just a stone’s throw from Fishergate.”
