A proposal to permanently increase the size of a Fulwood high school is being consulted on.

Archbishop Temple Church of England High School in St Vincents Road is taking an additional 55 pupils-a-year at Year 7 and this could become permanent.

Lancashire County Council wants the school to grow by 275 pupils in total with the expanded in-take at Year 7.

The county council says the increased school size is needed to ‘accommodate rising pupil numbers due to housing development in the area and an increase in the birth rate.’

A temporary expansion of the school in-take was approved for September last year and the new increased in-take would carry on from September this year.

To cope the school would see permanent expansion and remodelling of the existing accommodation.

Cabinet member for education and skills, county councillor Jayne Rear, said: “The county council is responsible for making sure that we have enough school places to meet demand.

“Housing developments, plus an increase in the birth rate, means we need to consider how further primary and secondary places could be provided.

“All school expansions are considered carefully against a set of consistent criteria and having applied these criteria to these proposals, we are confident this is the best course of action.

Archbishop headteacher Ivan Catlow told Blog Preston: “I am thrilled about the incredible opportunities that the current proposed expansion presents for Archbishop Temple Church of England High School. While any expansion brings its own set of challenges, we firmly believe that the benefits far outweigh them. The potential to refurbish and update some of our existing facilities, alongside the construction of a new building, addresses current accessibility and provision issues.

“As we eagerly await the outcome of the consultation process, envisioning the realisation of these proposals fills me with optimism. Should the expansion move forward, our pupils’ experience, the quality of the curriculum we offer, and the wider opportunities that we already consider a strength will reach state-of-the-art standards.

“We are committed to creating an environment that fosters growth, innovation, and excellence in education. The proposed expansion aligns perfectly with our vision for the future, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact it will have on our school community.

“Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this exciting journey.

Archbishop, which had previously been rated as outstanding by Ofsted, dropped to requires improvement following an inspection in September 2022.

The consultation on Archbishop’s expansion runs until 5pm on Sunday 3 March and information on the proposals can be found on the county council website and tapping ‘school place provision planning’.
