Sir Mark Hendrick has confirmed that he will stand for the eighth time to be Preston’s Labour MP in the next general election.

He has been Preston’s MP since a by-election took place in 2000 and was last re-elected in the 2019 general election.

Speaking about the upcoming general election, Sir Mark told Blog Preston: “I can confirm that I am standing as Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Preston for the eighth time, at the next general election.

“It is a privilege to represent Preston and I am looking forward to helping deliver a Labour Government which this country desperately needs.”

Sir Mark’s confirmation comes as councillor Neil Darby, who is a former mayor of Preston, said he would be standing for the Liberal Democrats as the Preston candidate in the general election when it is called.

Blog Preston contacted the Conservative party for confirmation of who will be standing in the general election but had received no response by the time of publication.

Boundary changes will be in place for the next general election which means thousands of Preston residents will find themselves in the Ribble Valley parliamentary constituency.

The change is part of a nationwide shake-up which has seen the borders of the current Preston seat redrawn and the other constituency bearing the city’s name – Wyre and Preston North – disappear altogether and Ben Wallace MP for that constituency has signalled his intention to stand down.

The aim of the process – undertaken by the Boundary Commission for England – was to ensure that voting areas across the country are of broadly similar size.

Proposals to shake-up the city’s constituency date back to 2016 and initial Boundary Commission proposals – as they stated the city had too low a number of electors.
