A Preston woman marked turning 30 by running 30 10k races in tribute to her beloved grandad.

Emily McEnnerney Whittle turned 30 in January 2023 and wanted to raise money for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Her grandad, Michael McEnnerney, of Ashton-on-Ribble, passed was of myeloma, or bone marrow cancer, in 2021. He was 88.

Emily, who took part in events throughout the North, said: “My grandad always used to watch my athletics events when I was at school. When I started running 10ks consistently about five years ago, he would be the first to ring me after a race to ask how I had got on. He loved seeing all the different
medals from these events too.

“Grandad was treated at Rosemere Cancer Centre and always spoke most highly of everyone there. Doing a running challenge in his name for a cause close to his heart has been a special way to remember him and I am very grateful to everyone who has supported me.”

Emily completed her challenge by January 2024 – before her 31st birthday – which meant she had to be ready to race approximately every 10 days.

Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to bring world-class cancer treatments and services to cancer patients from throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria being treated at Rosemere Cancer Centre, Lancashire and South Cumbria’s specialist regional cancer treatment and radiotherapy centre at the
Royal Preston Hospital, and at another eight local hospital cancer units across the two counties.
