A playful contemporary art exhibition has gone on display at The Birley. Amy Kim Grogan’s exhibition Meals on Wheels has been inspired by the artist’s mum’s devilish way of disguising odd food combinations as ‘party dinners’ and her Gran’s need to transport all meals on a hostess trolley.
Amy is a recent graduate from Glasgow School of Art and her tasty selection of 15 food-themed works is featured across The Birley’s three gallery spaces.
The artist has always been fascinated by people’s food choices, sparking a period of research examining people’s trolleys in the supermarket, checking out food combinations placed on plates at parties, and following food pages on social media – the work presented in the exhibition is a product of this research. Amy has combined the food with found objects such as a child’s tricycle, a hostess trolley, and a suitcase belonging to a man called Kevin.
In the accompanying exhibition leaflet, Amy describes where she observed the food combination and where the wheels were purchased from. So, for example, the 90 sausages and slice of bread were observed on Twitter and the suitcase is on loan from Kevin.
Amy Kim Grogan’s Meals on Wheels is on at The Birley in Birley Street on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm until Saturday 10 February.
