A spokesperson for police said: “A man has been bailed after our Roads Policing officers were met with a vehicle driving the wrong way on the motorway.

“Officers brought the car to a stop safely near junction 4 of the M55, and a 39-year-old man from Preston was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after giving a reading of 84mg at the roadside – nearly three times the legal limit of 35mg.

“Officers also discovered that there were three adult passengers and four unrestrained young children inside the vehicle. All passengers were driven to a place of safety off the motorway and all welfare and appropriate child referral agency needs have been put in place.”
