The statement said: “Over the last week, we have seen an increase in burglaries at places of worship across Preston.
“During the incidents, which have happened at Mosques and Churches in the Sharoe Green, Avenham and City Centre areas, offenders have forced their way into the buildings before stealing cash and other items.
“We appreciate that incidents like this can cause a great deal of upset in the community and we want to reassure you that we are investigating these crimes and have stepped up patrols in and around the areas.”
The post comes after Anglican church St George the Martyr just off Lune Street in George’s Road was damaged during a break-in.
The donation box, which was located at the back of the church, had money taken from it during the break-in which took place overnight between Friday 12 January and Saturday (13 January).
A spokesperson for the church said at the time: “It’s so discouraging to see a mindless act of vandalism such as this. We’re not a rich church flush with people. We operate largely hand to mouth through generous giving from the small and committed congregation. Our parish is in a designated area of deprivation and we work hard to try and make a difference in the city centre.
“We shan’t allow this to divert our energies. We will continue our work to the most needy and disadvantaged in Preston for that is what we’re called to do and it must continue.”
