A burst water main in the Broadgate area of the city is causing road and school closures.
Update: Latest on road closures in Fishergate Hill
United Utilities are beginning repairs in Fishergate Hill.
Properties in Preston city centre, Broadgate and Penwortham are experiencing a loss of water pressure or no water supply.
Schools closed include Whitefield Primary School, Hutton Grammar, Penwortham Priory Academy, All Hallows Catholic High School and Penwortham Girls High School.
The burst water main was reported around 4am on Tuesday (21 November).
An update from United Utilities at 7.30am said: “We’re sorry if you’re still experiencing no water or low pressure.
“Now that we’ve identified the cause of the problem, our team will assess the issue and start the repair work as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.”
An update at 11.30am said: “We’re happy to confirm that repairs to the burst are underway. Our team still have some work to do to get things back to normal, and are working as quickly as possible to restore supplies.
“However, some customers may experience discoloured water, this is due to the burst on Fishergate Hill which has caused disturbance to the water main. Historical sediments that have built up over time in the water pipe have been disturbed causing discolouration to your water.
“We know it doesn’t look nice but don’t worry, it’s unlikely to be harmful and will settle down again with time. You can help by letting your cold water tap run at a slight trickle until your water runs clear again.”
