Black to the Future is a celebratory event organised by Preston Black History Group in Black History Month in October every year.
The event celebrates and showcases the achievements of people of African origin, irrespective of their place of birth.
This year’s event will highlight Black achievements and Black achievers. Displays will illustrate some of the contributions made to the development of humankind by people of African origin throughout history.
The achievers presented will be local people who have succeeded in their individual fields, and their inspirational journeys will be shared.
A spokesperson for Preston Black History Group said: “All too often these stories have not been heard. Every October we take the opportunity to celebrate our community.
“The reason why we choose this celebration for October 2023 Black History Month is to highlight these achievements.
“We seek to educate the next generation of young people from our community to value and respect their African heritage. We want to inspire them to fulfil their potentials, hopes and dreams. Sharing pride by linking them to the inspirational people we have living amidst us.”
The free event is open to all. It will be held at Jalgos Sports and Social Club on Sunday 22 October and will begin at 3.45pm for networking. The presentations will start at 4pm.
The Mayor of Preston and other local dignitaries as well as community leaders and interested members of the community will be in attendance.
Preston Black History Group put on a number of events to educate, celebrate and explore African heritage. This year there are events planned throughout the month. Information can be found on the calendar on the PBHG website.
