An inter-faith group are due to debate whether the death penalty should be restored.

The Light Foundation, who organise a monthly gathering of faith leaders, have selected the topic following the sentencing of Lucy Letby and a poll by a national magazine asking the public about the topic.

The 33-year-old nurse at the Countess of Cheshire Hospital was given a whole-life sentence for murdering seven babies, and attempting to murder a further seven.

A spokesperson for The Light Foundation said: “Lucy Letby became only the third woman alive to be handed a whole-life jail term after being sentenced for murdering seven babies and trying to kill another six.

“However, for an outraged British public, it seems that this sentence is not enough. A recent poll for The Spectator by Redfield & Wilton, shows that 66 per cent of people favour the death penalty as a just punishment.

“Leaders and organisations representing various faiths and non, have taken stances on the death penalty, often tying their views to beliefs about human dignity, retribution, and redemption.”

The event, which is free to attend, takes place at the Quaker Meeting House at 189 St George’s Road, Deepdale on Thursday (7 September) from 7.30pm.

Anyone from any faith, or no faith, is welcome to attend.
