There’s severe congestion on the M6 and M61 as holidaymakers head for the Lake District.

Roadworks taking place between Junction 32 and Junction 33, where there’s lane closures for bridge repair works, are causing delays of more than an hour for motorists.

Queues are starting from just north of junction 28 on the M6 at Leyland and also from junction 8 of the M61 at Chorley.

The slow traffic is nearly all the way up to Junction 33 as motorists merge in to get by the roadworks.

The M6 delays as of just before 2pm on Saturday (9 September)

National Highways North West said: “There are currently delays of up to 45 minutes above usual journey times on the M6 northbound between J32 and J33 near Preston on approach to planned roadworks.

“One lane is currently closed. Please plan ahead of your journey if travelling through the area this afternoon”.

National Highways North West also said there are due to be six overnight closures of the motorway but no dates have been given at this stage.
