Lancashire County Council has issued an update on the Transforming Friargate North and Ringway scheme.

Work to pedestrianise Friargate began in May 2022, and was originally scheduled to finish in March 2023.

Delays have meant a subsequently planned autumn reopening has also been pushed back.

A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said: “Further progress has been made this week as the paving continues to be laid from restaurant Jaffa all the way up to Marsh Lane.

“To welcome students back to the city for the start of term, the team has been tidying up the area and the tree hoardings have been removed, opening up the view along the street.

“The next job will be to continue to work on the loading bay near Margaret Mason‚Äôs florists and paving in the circle around the Friargate/Ringway junction.

“The works will transform the look and feel of Friargate creating a fresh, modern space with new trees and seating for outdoor socialising, eating and drinking and live events.

“Friargate will improve the connection between the University Square with the city centre with a safe and traffic-free space (except for delivery times) for pedestrians and cyclists.”
