Fulwood Academy will open on Wednesday (6 September) after a structural engineer confirmed there was no concrete issue with its buildings.

Headteacher Andrew Galbraith says he was forced to order the additional inspection for the school in Black Bull Lane, Fulwood, after it was wrongly reported via BBC News that the school may have RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete).

Mr Galbraith said: “We knew Fulwood Academy did not have an issue with RAAC but it was imperative that we reassured parents, pupils, staff and the wider community that all our buildings were perfectly safe. That is why I took the very difficult decision to close for two days so an independent expert could fully inspect the whole site.

“It’s been terribly frustrating to delay our start to the new school year. This was meant to be really special for pupils, parents and staff. It is an historic moment for Fulwood Academy because for the first time we are starting a new school year as rated “Good” by Ofsted following an inspection in June. We planned a start to reinforce our status and drive on to be the best school we can possibly be, so this is just another challenge for us to overcome.

“I am confident that everyone associated with Fulwood Academy wants it to be an outstanding success. I know what achieving the “good” rating meant to the whole school community, but we continue to our next goal.

“It is testament to the hard work and determination of everyone connected with Fulwood that we have totally transformed the school and created an inclusive and respectful environment that fosters academic excellence and personal growth.

“The staff here are committed to providing excellent experiences both in and beyond the classroom. We make no apologies for setting ourselves and our pupils high expectations and the highest standards for teaching and learning. We aim to grow creative, ambitious and caring young people who will make unique contributions to the future.”

The Academy recently moved to a good rating from Ofsted following its latest inspection – its best ranking secured from the school inspector.

Our Lady’s Catholic High School in Fulwood has also been undergoing additional inspections after Lancashire County Council confirmed it may be affected by the RAAC crisis.
