A new bid to breath fresh life into a grade-II listed former windmill has been tabled.

Craggs Row Windmill which sits just off Moor Lane and close to Preston’s university campus has stood empty for decades.

Now developers – backed by Simca Investments – want to turn the building into an AirBnB venue.

Set over six floors there would be a mix of single en-suite rooms and two-bedroom places to stay.

In planning documents PSA Design state: “The proposal for the conversion and reuse of the windmill as an airbnb accommodation will involve the removal of the presumed historic timber staircases, which are badly damaged by fire and unfit for reuse, certainly at first and second floor level.

“The proposal is the re-use of an existing building providing a new use. The conversion will provide modern-day accommodation which will help retain the windmills character and heritage for years to come.

“The proposed conversion and re-use of an existing building will help the regeneration of the area and will support local businesses/tourist attractions.”

A previous proposal for the windmill was abandoned in 2021, tabled by Richard Porter and Chris Murray from Here for Humanity aimed to turn the building into a multi-level community hub.

However the pair shelved the project when the project costs spiralled and other business venues became a larger draw on their time.

The full fresh plans for Craggs Row Windmill can be seen on the Preston City Council website.
