A four-vehicle crash is causing major delays on the M61 during Tuesday evening.

The crash between Junction 8 (Chorley) and Junction 9 (M6/Walton Summit) has shut the motorway northbound and there is also severe congestion soutbound.
The diversion route for northbound traffic is onto the A6 and through Whittle-le-Woods from Junction 8, with most traffic leaving at Junction 6 to join the A6.

Lancashire Police are on the scene along with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. Police said the collision is ‘serious’.
The North West Air Ambulance has been called to the crash which took place around 4.30pm.
There are delays of more up to an hour against usual traffic conditions.
The current estimate for the delays clearing is around 9.15pm on Tuesday (1 August).
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “The northbound carriageway is completely closed at junction eight, Chorley, and traffic is backed up in both directions.
“We would advise motorists avoid the area and find alternative routes where possible.”
