Preston City Games returned at UCLan for first time in 10 years

UCLan Sports Arena hosted the first Preston City Games since 2012 on Friday 30 June that saw teams of businesses compete in football, rounders and netball, followed by Golf at Ashton and Lea Golf Club on the July 7.

Organised by business services provider Shout Connect, UCLan and Preston City Council, the event was declared a huge success with over 220 competitors and spectators attending during the day.

For each event, first, second and third placed teams were presented with medals by the Mayor of Preston, councillor Yakub Patel. Winners were also given a prestigious trophy and plaque.

Volunteers and officials helped to make the day run smoothly, while local businesses offered their support on the day. DR Bike provided free bike services and repairs, Go Velo and Lancashire E-Bikes brought along 7 e-bikes, and Jonah’s Coffee and the Falafel Express food van provided refreshments.

Lancashire County Council ran health checks and screening throughout the day.

Director of Shout Connect, Ian Coupe, said: “It was a great day with a fantastic competitive spirit from all teams. Seeing businesses come together in such a fun environment was truly inspirational and very entertaining. I’m also proud of the Shout Connect team for winning the rounders tournament!”

Dr Adrian Ibbetson, Director of Sport at UCLan said: “The relaunched Preston City Games lived up to expectations; competitive, fun and well organised.  The emphasis was on fair play and participation but with a bonus of bragging rights for the next 12 months over other businesses. We are already planning next year’s Games.”

Adrian Phillips, Chief Executive at Preston City Council said: “We are delighted to be able to host the City Games – a chance for local business and community organisations to come together to take part in a number of different sports for a fun and healthy competition.”
