One of the UK’s fastest-growing sports looks set for a permanent home at a city leisure centre.Advertisement
Plans have been lodged to redevelop a former outdoor sports pitch at West View Leisure Centre into a permanent Padel tennis outdoor court.
Three outdoor courts for padel, a form of tennis, would be created under the proposals to replace the two temporary – uncovered – courts which were put in.

A new covered structure would be put up permanently on one half of the existing outdoor sport pitches at the leisure centre operated by Better Leisure.
The plans from Game4Padel state: “The proposal seeks to locate the new courts close to the Leisure Centre to enable the facility to support the development of an additional new racquet sport at the centre. The proposed application will increase the overall leisure opportunities on offer for the local community.”
Padel is growing in popularity and is played on an enclosed court about a third of the size of a tennis court.
The scoring works in the same way to tennis but a padel court has walls so shots can be played off them.

Game4Padel currently have 12 courts across the UK and have dozens more in the works, including for Preston.
The new Padel courts would have potential operating times of 7am to 10pm seven-days-a-week and would be open to members and non-members.
