Penwortham’s Birch Avenue play area back open after £140k revamp

Birch Avenue in Penwortham saw a fully refurbished play area after South Ribble Borough Council invests £145,000 into the project.

On Tuesday, children from Whitefield Primary School and the Mayor of South Ribble; Councillor David Howarth along with other Councillors officially opened the Birch Avenue Play Area.

The play area underwent a complete makeover in 2022 with brand new state-of-the-art equipment installed replacing the worn, outdated facility.

Penwortham resident, Alison Robinson said, “It’s a great improvement on what it was, and I am looking forward to bringing my grandchildren along.

“There is plenty of interactive and accessible equipment for the little ones to get involved with”.

The range of equipment aimed at toddlers and juniors includes multi-climbers, slides, roundabouts, and seesaws. A brand-new section, ‘let’s pretend area’ for toddlers includes a mini road system, workshop and play car.

More accessible equipment has been added to include swing seats for all ages and abilities, play and sensory panels.

Leader of South Ribble Borough Council, Councillor Paul Foster said: “We are delighted to have refurbished another play area in South Ribble.

“Investing in our play areas and open spaces is brilliant for our community and is vital for some people in socialising and development.

“We hope everyone enjoys the new facility”.

Birch Avenue Play Area was last updated in 2005. The consultation for the new facilities went to consultation in November 2021 with feedback from residents used when creating the final designs.
