Preston City Council has secured funding to refurbish the Leighton Street Travellers Site which has been housing a family-led community for over 30 years.
The Development for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLHUC) approved the Council’s application to the Traveller Site Fund on 23 December 2022.
The grant funding and an addition to the Capital Programme was secured on Friday 13 January, to aid with more than £100k expenditures for renovation plans.

Reasons for the approval decision are stated on the Council’s website: “The additional funding will add value to the site enabling upgrades to mechanical and electrical installations to be completed, together with the creation of a new toilet block and caravan pitch providing additional residential accommodation.
“These improvements will provide a positive impact for the residents of Leighton Street Travellers Site.
“The successful funding bid helps contribute towards the “Fairness for You” corporate initiative and enables upgrade to the site at minimal expenditure.”
The site was transferred from Lancashire County Council to Preston City Council in May 2022, after significant concerns raised in the Traveller community over the possible sale of the Preston site.
