The Preston music scene is mourning the loss of one of its largest characters.
Action Records’ Allan Atkinson passed away peacefully on Saturday morning after a short illness.
Owner of the legendary city centre record store, Gordon Gibson, announced the news on the Action Records Facebook page.
In the heartfelt tribute, Gordon said: “It is with a sad heart that I have to announce the death of my oldest friend and colleague.
“I first met Allan around 1973 when we were waiting for a bus back from a Hawkwind gig in Blackburn and our friendship has continued ever since.
“It was with his help and knowledge of music that I managed to set up Action Records and keep it going all these years.
“His large character was and will always be part of the shop. He will always be missed by us.”
People responded with sadness at the news.
Craig Forshaw said: “Ah man. Absolutely gutted. What a legend and a lovely bloke. Top top man. Kept us in check with dry humour and witty responses. RIP Allan.”
Jacky Carroll commented: “I have so many special memories of him and all my Action Records family. He was an incredible human. Much loved, unique and irreplaceable.”
Pete Brown said: “Such a big loss to the Preston music scene… Always had great chats with Big Al.”
Mick Shepherd added: “Allan was a fantastic person and synonymous with Action. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.”
