Preston physiotherapist Donna Griffiths began the run-up to her 50th birthday celebrations in November by collecting her first ever triathlon medal.

A feat made all the more special as her two children and a number of friends also collected the same medal and helped her raise more than £2,500 for Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Donna, who works in the NHS and also runs an animal physiotherapy practice, competed in last weekend’s Lake District SUPBIKERUN alongside 15-year-old daughter Taylor and 13-year-old son Connor, who was the event’s youngest participant, and nine family friends.

They successfully completed a 20km bike ride, 5km trail run and instead of the usual starting swim, a 3km SUP – stand up paddleboard on Lake Ullswater.

Donna, said: “The run was especially hard as there was a steep climb but it was about celebrating life and giving back for treatment that I and my children’s godmothers received at Rosemere Cancer Centre.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, Taylor’s godmother was diagnosed and treated in 2015 and Connor’s in 2017.

“Other family has also received treatment there. I am grateful to have my 50th birthday to look forward to.

“I am also very grateful to everyone who helped us raise our donation and joined us in the triathlon, especially Pam Nott and Cath without whose help Connor and I probably wouldn’t have finished.”

Donna’s online fundraising page is still open, its name – 13 Lucky for some, is a reference to plans for a 13-strong team initially signing up for the triathlon in Donna’s name, but a pregnancy and injuries meant four members had to withdraw or defer until next year.
