Firefighters are battling a huge blaze at the derelict St David’s Church in Eldon Street.
The fire is thought to have started at around 5.45am this morning (Thursday 27 October).
Eight fire engines from Preston, Fulwood, Penwortham, Bamber Bridge and Chorley, along with the command unit and Stinger from Blackburn, the water bowser from Leyland and aerial ladder platforms from Blackpool and Preston attended.
Nimesh Patel from Best One, situated opposite, said he believed it was only a matter of time before there was a fire at the church.
Nimesh said: “The church was boarded up last week because there have been kids going in repeatedly.
“I’ve also heard that people were living there so hopefully there was nobody inside when this happened.
“When it first went up you could see flames over the garage roof. The Inkerman Street side of the building is all wood so it went up badly.
“It’s a shame really. It’s still a church at the end of the day, until it’s knocked down.”
St David’s Church and the community hall is set to be demolished to make way for a new supported living development.
