Preston city centre is officially celebrating today after receiving the news that it has once again been awarded the prestigious ‘Purple Flag’ accreditation for its evening and night-time economy (ENTE).

Similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – which aims to raise standards and broaden appeal; the accreditation measures and recognises what towns and cities have to offer, between the hours of 17:00 & 05:00.

Areas granted the ‘Purple Flag’ standard are awarded the accolade by a panel of national experts, in recognition of providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment, and culture, whilst promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

The last few years have not been what anyone expected, and destinations across the UK have had to tread new territory in recovering from the effects of the pandemic.

Destinations being awarded the accreditation in 2022 have clearly evidenced this to the awarding-panel.

A spokesperson from the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), awarders of the standard, said:

“‘Purple Flag’ has been important to many of our towns and cities that hold the accreditation during lockdown, as well as being instrumental in the reopening policies and strategies with key stakeholders as our towns and cities adjust to the new way of life post-pandemic.”

A spokesperson from Preston BID, said: “Preston city centre venues work tirelessly, often under business pressures, to continually offer a safe, vibrant and inclusive night out – this award is testament to their hard work, the support of partners and loyal Prestonians who support them, year round”.

Preston remains the only place in Lancashire to ‘fly’ the Purple Flag.
