Haslingden Ladies and Girls FC ended Preston North End Women’s unbeaten start to the season on Sunday after an agonising 3-2 defeat.

The Lilywhites entered the game confidently with an emphatic win midweek over Morecambe Ladies, thrashing them 5-0 on Wednesday 31 August.

The visitors though were quick off the mark at UCLan Sports Arena dominating possession, leading to them scoring in the 7th minute with a shot from 40 yards out. Goalkeeper Justine Elliott provided some excellent saves to keep Preston in the game, and chances were created but prevented by Haslingden’s good defending.

It took until the 39th minute of play for Preston to equalise, with a cool as you like goal from Madison Hadley – putting her name on the scoresheet an impressive five times from just two games.

With all to play for in the second half, Preston continued to look strong and confident on the ball, but a free kick awarded to Haslingden saw the visitors go up 2-1 in the 52nd minute. This lead was extended in the 65th minute with a chip of the ball over Justine Elliott.

PNE became more determined during the game leading to multiple chances for the team, but play was stopped temporarily after a Haslingden player received full force of a huge shot from Askam.

Freya Hunt was able to get a goal back in the 90th minute for Preston, but the full time whistle blew just before any equaliser could occur. The defeat ends a seven-match unbeaten start to the season for Preston North End Women.

Speaking after the game, co-manager David Rawcliffe said: “We were a bit slow to start. We weren’t on it for the first 15 to 20 minutes, they bossed it and probably deservedly went a goal ahead.

“For the last 20 to 25 minutes of the first half, I thought we were the much better team and we managed to get ourselves back into the game.

“We got the goal that we needed to take us into half-time. I just felt that we had a bit of momentum but we needed to come out strong. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t there second half.

“It just didn’t click for us today. Their experience told in the end. We just left it too late to get back.

“Full credit to them, they came here and did a great job, they have a good, experienced side and we just didn’t have enough today.”

Preston North End will now only return to league action in October, but play this Sunday (11 September) in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup, playing Atherton Labernum Rovers Ladies at UCLan Sports Arena
