Preston North End have given a lifetime ban to a fan who tweeted about the Queen.

The fan, who asked not to be named, posted on Twitter on Thursday 8 September: “Will I be ejected from the stadium if I boo during a minutes silence for the death of the queen?”

They then responded to one comment on the original post with: “What about if I do a Nazi salute in her honor?”, in reference to footage of the Queen in 1933.

Two days later, the fan received an email from the club, which said: “To confirm my phone call and email to you on Friday 9th September 2022, your comments on twitter about the Queen and Royal Family were reported to the club and the board were informed.

“As a result of your comments Preston North End do not want to be associated with you, therefore you are receiving a life ban. Your season ticket and club account have been blocked from use.

“This ban includes ALL MATCHES AT DEEPDALE & ALL RESERVE/ FRIENDLY/ YOUTH TEAM FIXTURES. The Police have been advised accordingly.

“This ban also-relates to you entering all Preston North End F.C. property, including the Shop. Ticket Office and from purchasing or obtaining any away match tickets from this Club. Should you enter Club property during this ban you will be ejected and other actions may well follow, such as court injunctions or involvement of the police. All football clubs where Preston have an away fixture will also be informed.”

The original tweet and the club’s response was shared on Twitter by The 72, where many replies commented it was ‘harsh’ and questioned ‘freedom of speech’.

One response said: “It’s a bit like asking a policeman will you arrest me for doing such and such, and the copper turning round and saying in fact we’re going to arrest you for just asing about it. Crazy imo. Can’t take action on someone just for asking a question.”

Another said: “An ill advised tweet for sure but surely he is being banned for a theoretical boo. No offence has taken place. Do PNE give life bans for actual booing the knee, racist and homophobia language? If not they need to sort their priorities.”

A third added: “Racism and homophobic language = We can’t prove he said this but we’ll keep an eye on him. Disrespectful comments made by the Queen = Instant Lifetime ban.”

One commenter who came to PNE’s defence said: “Well done PNE. Time people had some respect and manners for the royal family dragged up the lot of em that don’t respect em.”

PNE did not respond to a request for a comment.
