However the first weekend of closures (Friday 9 September to Monday 12 September) caused chaos, with furious motorists claiming to have been stuck on the motorway for up to 11 hours.

Following those issues, National Highways Divisional Director Alan Shepherd told Blog Preston: “We are sincerely sorry for the delays experienced by drivers on the M6 this weekend and will be reviewing the traffic management, signage and communications ahead of future weekend closures.”

The second weekend was ‘paused’ as motorway closures were lifted ahead of the Queen’s funeral, but National Highways have now confirmed no further closures will take place.

A spokesperson told Lancaster Guardian said: “We have taken on board recent feedback and plan to do things differently while we confirm the rest of the programme with our contractors; we no longer plan to carry out this work under full weekend closures.

“Some of our people will be on site overnight on Friday to complete work already in progress, however this will be done under lane closures – the M6 will remain open.

“Once the new programme has been finalised with our contractors, we will share more information on the National Highways website and via our social media channels.”
