UCLan lecturer lands ‘PhD Supervisor of the Year’ award
A senior lecturer from UCLan has secured a national award for offering ‘outstanding support’ to PhD students.
UCLan Senior Lecturer Dr Clive Palmer was named ‘PhD Supervisor of the Year’ at the annual FindAUniversity Postgrad Awards 2022 after beating off competition from a final shortlist of eight.
Postgrad awards judges chose Clive as the winner because of his ‘proven commitment’ to sharing best practices in PhD supervision, with his lockdown ‘Learning Shack’ keeping over 50 PhD students on track during the pandemic.
Mayor unveils plaque twinning Sir Tom Finney Soccer Centre with WWI peace site
The Mayor of Preston has unveiled a plaque commemorating the Peace Field Project, twinning a local sports centre with a Belgian WWI truce site.
On Saturday, 9 July at 10am, the Mayor of Preston, Councillor Neil Darby, unveiled a plaque linking the Sir Tom Finney Soccer Centre at UCLan Sports Arena, Tom Benson Way, with designated areas of play at the Flanders Peace Field in Mesen, Belgium.
The Sir Tom Finney Peace Field Plaque is the result of a partnership between the Sir Tom Finney Preston Soccer Centre, The Sir Tom Finney FC and UCLan.
Former homeless Preston man to walk the Guild Wheel
A formerly homeless Preston man has urged residents to donate to a fundraiser that will see him walk 21 miles around the Guild Wheel for a local charity.
Emmaus Preston supports Shaun, who used to live in a tent in a location where he went fishing when he became homeless after a battle with addiction and the breakdown of a relationship.
His daughter, Makenziee Wells, has organised the walk on Sunday, 17 July, to raise funds for Emmaus, which supports her dad, focusing on daily work, welfare support and accommodation.
Preston Vocational Centre celebrates award-winning construction stars
A local training centre has thrown an awards night to celebrate the successes of students learning construction skills.
On 5 July, Preston Vocational Centre (PVC) awarded trophies and a fully equipped tool-set to the students – who received their City and Guilds qualifications, with some gaining special awards for their outstanding work in particular trades.
PVC provides hands-on opportunities in different construction areas, including plastering, joinery, decorating and brickwork.
The Fulwood Club marks presidents’ day with 150th anniversary celebration
A local sports club marked its 150th anniversary last weekend with a presidents’ day bowling competition.
On Saturday, 9 July, from 10.30am to 4pm, The Fulwood Club, a bowling and snooker centre on Victoria Road, celebrated its presidents’ day and commemorated its anniversary.
President Eileen Wood presented the trophy to Emma Bolton, who won the final of the presidents’ day bowling competition.
