She answered pupils’ questions and spoke about how her characters evolved, how long it takes her to write books and what inspires her stories.
She explained how she draws her characters and then cuts these out so that she can rearrange them around the page until she is happy with where they are.
Then she creates the final illustration by collage. The children also learnt that Lauren uses a different font in her books for each character in order to portray personalities and that some of Lauren’s books had taken years to write!
Inskip’s Headteacher Kate Leyland said: “We may be a very small school but we work hard to provide big learning experiences for our pupils, it’s an honour that Lauren agreed to come to our school today to inspire our children.”

Penny Kemp a class teacher at the school, organised the event “It was fascinating to listen as she told us all about how she writes her books and creates her illustrations.
“The characters Clarice Bean, Charlie and Lola, Ruby Redfort, along with Lauren’s many other picture books, have been a big part of our school’s reading collection for many years and to get the opportunity to learn how they were created was just magical.”
Lauren Child visited Inskip St Peter’s as she has just published a brand new Clarice Bean book called ‘Clarice Bean Scram!’ She read from the book to the children and signed copies of it for them.
The visit was arranged through Elaine Silverwood of Book, Bean and Ice Cream bookshop in Kirkham.
