Lucy said: “My sport is running but we were able to secure charity places in the Great North Swim’s one mile event for our Children’s Appeal. I am going to swim and have been training at my local pool while my son has been having his weekly swimming lesson.

“I can now swim a mile in the pool in about 38 minutes but outside conditions are likely to add a good few minutes more to this time.

“If anyone would like to join me and the rest of the swim team, please telephone me. There is a registration fee of ÂŁ44 for all mile swimmers but for those swimming for charity, it is reduced to ÂŁ30, which is quite a saving. We are though asking our swim team members to raise funds through sponsorship for our Children’s Appeal.”

Already signed up as part of the team is Sarah Knowles, of Marple, Lucy’s best friend of more than 25 years. They are swimming on the Saturday afternoon and providing they complete their swim, are set to collect more than £600 for the appeal, raised through their joint online JustGiving page.

Also swimming is Children’s Appeal patron Barry Leahey MBE, of Samlesbury. He too has a JustGiving
page
and has to date raised more than ÂŁ1,500.

Lucy added: “I am going to be in Windermere all swim weekend. Swimmers can be part of the Children’s Appeal team without actually swimming alongside any of us. When you receive one of our places, you are free to choose your swim date and time. I will though come along and cheer you on!”

To request a place, call Lucy on 01772 528500. All swimmers will receive a Great North Swim t-shirt and medal at the end of their swim.

Through its Children’s Appeal, the hospital charity team is working on raising £1 million for a shopping list of items to improve patient and family experience across children’s services at the Royal Preston Hospital, Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, Leyland’s Broadoaks Child Development Centre where it wants to build a new outdoor play park assessment area, and other centres.
