A Preston woman is raising money for a cat rescue charity with a daring 15,000 ft skydive later this year.

Wendy Cavanagh from Calder Vale began her journey with East Lancashire Cats (ELC) in 2021.

She received a Facebook message from the charity asking for foster parents as they desperately needed temporary homes for all the cats they had rescued, a problem the team still faces.

Wendy had an interview, followed by a home visit and was taken on as a foster mum.

She told Blog Preston more about what her daily role includes.

She said: “My role as a foster mum is to make sure these poor babies, that have had the worst start in life, end up having the best one. That means getting them used to being cuddled, stroked, picked up, and getting them to grow in confidence knowing that they are loved and safe.

“Then I get to do the hardest bit, and pass them on to their new homes, only after the new owners have been well and truly vetted by me and a senior member of ELC.”

Wendy highlighted how money is an issue for the charity. Despite rescuing the cats there are not enough homes and safe environments for the cats to be taken in. This is how one day she came up with an innovative idea to raise money for a good cause.

She said: “I’m passionate about ELC because they are a very hard working team that would never turn any cat away. They all dedicate their lives to help these poor cats that have found themselves in, no fault of their own, neglected and on the streets.

“But unfortunately they have more cats than money and in a brainstorming session to think of ways to raise more money I found myself saying ‘I’ll do a sky dive.’ A stunned silence followed, then ‘Would you really do that?’ And again my mouth opened before I engaged my brain and I said ‘Yes!’ So here we are.”

On Friday 2 September, Wendy will be skydiving to raise as much awareness and money as she can for the cause and has promised to ‘scream’ all the way down, which she has noted will be worth the terrifying moment.
