Preston Jazz and Improvisation Festival finale coming to Winckley Square Gardens

‘Soul personified’ LayFullstop

The finale of the Preston Jazz and Improvisation Festival takes place this weekend.

The free event, Jazzin’ the Park 2022, will feature six live acts across the Jazz and Jazz-fused spectrum, supported by DJs.

Held on Saturday 28 May from 1pm to 7pm, the event will take place in Winckley Square Gardens.

La French 

Preston’s ambient/beats producer who’s recent Alinea EP, out on Preston’s Concrete Tapes label, has been extremely well received, as have his recent live performances. Stunning soundscapes to open the show.

Bear Talk 

Guitar-led instrumental Trio, with a mixture of originals and covers from a group of highly accomplished and seasoned Preston musicians, dropping flava from the Funky Jazz spectrum especially for Jazzin’ the Park 2022.

Multi-instrumentalist Tenderlonious will appear at Jazzin’ the Park

Head of the massively current, and highly acclaimed, 22a label, this multi-instrumentalist, alongside his other label cohorts, Mo Colours, Jeen Bassa, Reginald Omas Mamode IV, Al Dobson Jr, Denis Ayler and Henry Wu, have become the sound of London. The natural successors of the Broken Beat, Nu-Jazz, Nu-Soul, etc. sound, Tenderlonious are genre bending through Jazz, House, Electronic, Broken Beat, Hip-Hop delivering the underground sound of today.

Birmingham born, Manchester bred, and soul personified. Female vocalist who wears her heart on the sleeve of her music, bringing soul to both the ‘mandem’ and ‘gyaldem’ via her view of Hip Hop and Jazz.

Chiminyo is a drummer and producer based in North London who combines the raw, immediate live sound of percussion and the futuristic timbres of his electronic productions to create his own, daring soundworld without backing. Just back off tour with the legendary Gary Bartz, Chiminyo has also collaborated with Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, and Zara McFarlane.

Nat Birchall 

Hailed by Gilles Peterson as ‘one of the best musicians in the UK’, saxophonist Nat Birchall remains one of the UK’s hidden jazz treasures. Playing tenor and soprano saxophones, he is a band leader, composer and arranger (and occasional DJ) who has grabbed listeners attention with his soulful sound and inspirational spiritual music.  His recent album Afro Trane is an ode to John Coltrane.  A spiritual Jazz journey incorporating the spirit and vibe of this deep Black art form.
