The 50mph sign in the 30mph zone on Queen Street

Police today switched off a traffic sign displaying the incorrect speed on Preston’s Queen Street.

This morning (Thursday 16 December), the remote control sign prompted road users to drive 50mph in a 30 zone, sparking confusion from residents.

The digital sign told drivers to ‘please drive carefully’ before switching to 50mph, 20mph over the legal limit for the road.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We received a report this morning via Lancashire County Council that this variable messaging sign was showing the wrong speed limit.

“The signs are controlled remotely, and it was immediately turned off. We’re sorry for any confusion caused and will be reviewing what happened in this instance.”

Lib Dem Councillor Phoenix Adair took to Twitter to voice concerns.
