Preston Opera was the brainchild of local musician Frank Salter, who gathered together a small group of singers with a mutual interest in performing opera in 1965.

Early productions were staged in the Preston Playhouse, and in 1976, Preston Opera moved to the Charter Theatre, where it has performed annually ever since.
