Cases of Covid-19 in Lower Penwortham North jumped from 196 to 1,192 per 100,000 during the week before Christmas.

The numbers show the area is in the worst-hit neighbourhood in England.

The Daily Mail is reporting how Academics at the Sanger Institute – one of the country’s largest variant-tracking laboratories – pulled together data highlighting the way England went from detecting its first case of Omicron towards the end of November to it becoming dominant in swathes of the country within a matter of weeks.
